Many parents I speak with express confusion about why their fencers should participate in Division 2 or Division 3 events. They often point out that the spotlight seems to be on age groups, especially starting with Cadet. With no national team for Div2 or Div3, some wonder about the value of fencing in these categories, especially considering the additional expenses and time away from work.
Allow me to say it loud and clear: I LOVE Div2 and Div3 competitions at the Summer Nationals.
The reason is simple: they are the most democratic events.
Why is that?
In Cadet or Junior events, less experienced teenagers often face super-strong opponents, sometimes even world champions or medalists. While it’s a privilege to fence at this level, it can also be intimidating. However, in Div2/3 competitions, skill levels are capped by ratings (C for Div2 and D for Div3), making them more democratic. This levels the playing field and opens up opportunities for fencers to perform well and even medal.
This is crucial for building confidence, a major ingredient in fencing success. Knowing that you can perform well nationally and compete on equal footing with others builds confidence and prepares fencers for higher-level competitions. Thanks to the confidence and experience gained, it’s not uncommon to see medalists in Div2/3 events excel in their age categories the following years.
Another benefit is the opportunity for fencers of any age to compete together. Fencing against adult fencers provides valuable inspiration, motivation, and exposure to different styles and tactics.
Finally, Div2/3 events are less stressful because there are no national team implications. Fencers can compete purely for the love of the sport without worrying about national points or standings.
With the regular registration fee for the USA Fencing Summer Nationals closing on May 10, my recommendation is simple: if you qualify for these divisions, sign up. You won’t regret it.
